Most hobby artists don’t view their talent as something that could ever lead to a full- time income. People shouldn’t, however, allow well-meaning advice from parents or others about getting a ‘real job’ cause them to despair and give up on their dreams. Many artists have developed their skills and careers sufficiently to be able to devote all their time to the pursuit of art.
The first thing to note is that, to become a successful artist, you must have a passion for what you do. Passion is far more important than artistic talent. Art, for those so inclined, is like an addiction; something to do for fun that is more fun than socializing, playing video games, or watching television. If you are a person that enjoys art and enjoys creating art on a regular basis, then a career in the field of art is not out of reach. Esther Ritz, a Dallas abstract painter explains, “The key is showing up, consistently!! Art is like any other endeavor--you have to practice constantly.”
This same Dallas abstract painter, Esther Ritz, gives advice on beginning a career as an artist: “There are many different paths. I would spend a lot of time at first talking to other artists and visiting their workplaces”. The art world can be fickle and ruthless. Be wary of art dealers who want to represent you. They may end up getting a greater percentage of the profits than you do.
It is much better if people can sell their own work. That way they keep control over their own artistic creations. A good place to start trying to sell your work would be to people you know. From there, you could try art fairs in your local area. Some people have had success selling their work at a flea market or using eBay. It is a good idea to have a website from which people who have heard about you or seen your art can order your work.
Selling your first piece of artwork may happen quickly or it may take time. When asked about selling her first painting, Esther Ritz shares, “I was still very much an amateur--I felt excited, but not surprised I think”. Artists may need to have a side job until their career as an artist has become fully established. Esther Ritz, a Dallas abstract painter, when asked if it is difficult to become a successful artist, replied, “It is very difficult!” The passionate and determined artist will eventually become a successful artist. Flourishing artists, living out their dreams, doing what they love, will not all look the same. Some artists do only one thing, such as painting abstract works of art with oil paints, but others do many things, such as create custom jewelry, restore old furniture, and draw caricatures on the street corner. Your dream is your dream. Only you can really determine how to live it out.
