The Journey into Art: Painting with Oils
Dallas Oil Painter Esther Ritz

When creating a work of art, many different mediums can be used.   One of the most well-known types of art is oil painting.  Painting with oils involves using a ‘drying’ oil mixed with pigments of different colors.  The oil does not actually dry (evaporate) but oxidizes to a hardened state.  The most common oil used is linseed oil, which comes from flax.
Esther Ritz, a Dallas oil painting artist, describes her experience: “The canvas becomes a playground for the tug of war between figure and abstraction, my expression, and the insistent nature of the paint itself”.   There has been a long history of painting with oils, and many modern painters still enjoy this medium.  Though oil painting is not usually recommended for beginners, it is an exciting venture for those up to the challenge.

History of Oil Painting

Oil painting originated in South East Asia.  It arrived in Europe during the 15th century.  Jan van Eyck was one of Europe’s earliest artists to use oil paint.  At first, oil painting was done on wooden panel.  Wood can warp in moist conditions, so, in time, canvas became the painting surface of choice.  Canvas was traditionally made from linen, but now cotton canvas is also commonly used.
Oils used to be made by hand, crushing the pigments and mixing the oils.  Now, oil paints can be purchased in tubes at your local arts and crafts supply store.  Nevertheless, some mixing of the paints will usually still be required, especially by the experienced painter.

Two Noteworthy Contemporary Oil Painters of Dallas

Dallas is well known for its inhabitants’ interest in the arts, proven by the numerous art galleries and museums.  Of equal importance are the artists who live there.

Chris McHenry is a Dallas oil paintings artist whose works include beautiful scenes of Dallas landscapes and architecture using oil paints on linen canvas.

Esther Ritz is a Dallas oil painting artist devoted to abstract artwork.  Her artwork has been displayed in Dallas art galleries as well as in other parts of the U.S.

How to Paint Using Oils

It is often recommended that the beginning artist should start by sketching real objects.  Oil painting should usually only be attempted after the basic artistic skills have been mastered.  The general procedure to follow when painting with oils involves seven steps.

  1.  Stretch the canvas over the wooden frame and fasten with staples.
  2. Coat the canvas with gesso, a mixture of glue and chalk.  Some canvas comes pre-coated.  Also, acrylic (synthetic) gesso can be used.
  3. Apply the under layer.  Use turpentine to thin the paint.  This layer may be used to sketch the subject.
  4. Add the background colors.
  5. Let the painting dry.
  6. Paint the details, using olier paint.   Each layer must be oilier than the one beneath it or the painting will crack.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 and many times as needed.

Painting with oils takes patience and practice, but it is interesting and fun, and the results can be fascinatingly beautiful.
