About the Work
Garden Shadow captures the transient poetry of natural light filtering through living foliage. Rooted in Esther Ritz’s practice of Process Painting- approaching the canvas without preliminary sketches or botanical studies- the piece translates the felt sensation of an organic garden into an intuitive, tactile abstract dialogue.
Layering subtle mixed-media textures beneath acrylic washes, Ritz constructs an atmospheric ground that mirrors the depth and mystery of dappled shade. Emerging through these layers are organic, biomorphic silhouettes anchored by her signature pointillist dot constellations. The rhythmic dotwork introduces an optical frequency akin to shifting sunlight, creating harmony between structured marks and fluid, earthen contours. Held in compositional equilibrium by the 36 × 36 inch square format, Garden Shadow endures as a serene, evocative exploration of natural atmosphere and contemplative presence.
