About the Work

Created in 2026 and selected for exhibition by the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation, Ebony and Ivory is an exhilarating exploration of counterpoint, musical cadence, and visual harmony. Grounded in Esther Ritz’s practice of Process Painting - approaching the raw canvas without preconceived grids or preparatory sketches - the piece emerged in direct dialogue with sonic rhythm and tempo in the studio.

A river of luminous cerulean, turquoise, and deep cobalt sweeps through the core of the composition, framed by radiant cadmium yellows and warm ivory negative space. Cutting through these organic color fields are crisp, rhythmic black-and-white motifs reminiscent of piano keys, musical intervals, and improvisational notation.

Encapsulated within these forms are Ritz’s signature pointillist dot constellations and geometric shields, acting as staccato accents against fluid, calligraphic contours. Balanced within a commanding 36 × 36 inch square format, Ebony and Ivory marks a major milestone in Ritz’s recent work, presenting a sophisticated, joyous dialogue between discipline and spontaneous expression.
